The library opens at 7:30 a.m. and closes at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesdays – Fridays.

On Mondays the library opens immediately following the weekly faculty update meeting usually around 7:45 a.m. and closes at the regular time. On Tuesday and Wednesday the library is usually open until 4:00.

The library is closed on occasions when there is testing. At times it may be closed due to principal’s discretion for school related meetings or other educational purposes.

Online Library

From any Internet-based computer access to many library resources are available 24/7 from our information portal: fhslibrarymedia.wikispaces.com

Break Time

The librarian usually works in the library both break periods but that may vary from day-to-day based on the schedule along with teacher and student needs. Students do not need a pass to use the library during break, but they must sign-in.

Stay at break if you want to visit or eat. No food or drink is allowed to be eaten in the library by any student at any time, unless there in an emergency situation as stipulated by the librarian.

If a class is using the library during a given break time, students who should be at break may be excluded from using the library and would return to the snack bar.

Lunch Time

Students do need a pass from their 5th period teacher prior to using the library during lunch. Otherwise, students are required to stay in the lunchroom during the entire lunch period.

If using the library during lunch, students must stay in the library for the entire lunch period and must sign-in. Again, no food or drink should be consumed while in the library.

The librarian will always adapt his/her personal lunchtime based on a teacher’s schedule who reserved the library during 5th period, so there may be a class using the library during a given lunch period.

If a class is using the library during a given lunch time, students who should be at lunch may be excluded from using the library and must return to the lunchroom.

Open for Special Assemblies

The library is also usually open during special school assemblies, pep rallies, or other school functions for those students who have difficulties in attending, but students should have a teacher’s pass to enter and must sign-in.

The library may occasionally close for special events/needs such as when the librarian is involved with computer repairs, or when large groups have reserved it for use.

Open After School – By Appointment

The library may occasionally be open for students and teachers after school hours upon special request on Tuesdays, Wednesday, or Fridays.

Check with the librarian to schedule a late session at least 48 hours in advance of need (2 days).

Use of the Library

The library and its librarian are available to cooperatively serve both student and faculty patrons at the point of need through the daily operation of the library and the coordination of scheduling its services and resources within the school setting as well as online assess.

We strive to provide quality resources and instruction in a timely manner. Patrons will find our print collection particularly outdated and our technology resources extremely limited due to the fact that school libraries in the State of Alabama have received $0.00 funding each year from the Alabama Legislature since the 2005-2006 school year. However, the Legislature has annually funded the Alabama Virtual Library (AVL) which contains the only professional and current databases our school can offer patrons.

The Alabama Virtual Library is a wealth of resouces. If you are a citizen of the State of Alabama, you have unlimited access to the AVL through a school, academic, or public library, as well as home use through an Internet connection. Geolocation software authenticates any user residing inside the geographic boundaries of the State with automatic access, so there is no need for an AVL user card or password.

With the most often used resources being technology and popular fiction, we have strived to provide these resources locally through donations, grants, loans and local fundraisers. Please be aware that your school library accepts donations of gently-used, age appropriate books as well as, money and other items. Please see the librarian for details of how you can actively support your school library.

Signing-In

Upon entering students, must show their pass and sign-in when using the library during a class period, unless the teacher has made other arrangements such as reserving the library for small groups or classes.

Individual Use on Pass Visits

Students may use the library during class time when a teacher has sent them with a pass. Again, students on pass visits MUST sign-in at the circulation desk.

Open Circulation

The library has open circulation which allows students the opportunity to check out material at the point of need provided they have their teacher’s permission to leave the classroom or come during lunch their own time during break, lunch, or before and after school.

Whole Class, Small Group, or Individual Book Circulation

Whole classes are pre-arranged so students do not need to sign-in, as they are listed on the library master calendar, but they do not have a reserved library space or use of computers. Some ELA classes come to check in/out books every other week, as a whole class, or the teacher may choose to send an individual or small group of students through out day/week on Pass Visits.

Small Group Use (Computers)

Teachers may send a group of 5 or 6 students to use the library’s computers, but should coordinate with the librarian in advance. Sending students to use the library in small groups for other purposes should be via pass visits, unless pre-arranged with the librarian.

Whole Class Use

Teachers may coordinate with the librarian to schedule student use of the library for circulation to the whole class, use of the library computers, or use of the library classroom & presentation area.

Collaborative Lessons

Teachers may also work together with the librarian to plan lessons, projects, and activities with students in order to team-teach together and assist students with learning academic, information and technology skills. Many of these projects in which the librarian and teachers collaborated are linked through the library wiki and are available to students from home.

General Use of Library Guidelines

When classes are using the library, particularly when the teacher or librarian is teaching, students who come in on pass visits are expected to enter quietly and sit away from the other students. Please do not be disruptive when you are sharing the library with others.

If the computers are reserved by a class, you must ask the librarian for permission to use the computers as reserved classes have priority over students using pass visits.

Pass visit students may be excluded from using the library when the library/computers are reserved for a class.

Students are expected to check in or out materials or save files at least five minutes before the bell rings. No late passes will be issued by the librarian for tardiness. If equipment malfunctions or there is an unavoidable delay that keeps a student from leaving by the bell, the librarian will contact the teacher to let him/her know. It is the student’s responsibility to get to their next class on time.

Student Expectations for Behavior

All students are expected to follow all school rules and policies (dress code, tobacco, hall passes, etc.) Students must have specific permission from the librarian to use their phone or other personal electronic devise (Kindle, iPad, eReader, computer, etc.) If students do obtain permission, they should not use both earpieces, or have the sound loud enough that others hear the device.

For safety reasons, including those of an emergent nature, you should always be able to hear the librarian speak to you even with ear-bud/headphones on!

All students are expected to follow all library rules, guidelines and procedures. Such as returning chairs to their proper place and pushing them in to the tables, not leaning back in chairs, throwing away trash, and returning borrowed items to the circulation desk.

Students are also cautioned to follow all technology rules and guidelines. Students should not attempt to bi-pass the filter or alter any computer settings, download or delete files without permission, and students should save all their work in their Google Drive.

Use of the library, its technology and other resources, is a privilege not a right.

Remember the librarian uses software to monitor the use of library computers

Everyone is expected to be courteous and to respect their fellow students, the school staff, the library facility, its furnishings, its resources and materials.

Ask for a library hall pass to use the restroom, water fountain, to go to your locker, or leave the library for any reason where you plan to be returning within the same period.

You may only leave with permission to return to your room for the remainder of the period and you should take your hall pass back with you.

Teacher aides must have a specific need to use library resources during their aiding period, otherwise teacher student aides should remain in the teacher’s classroom where they are responsible to their supervising teacher.

Technology Services

Google Drive and Gmail

FHS is a Google Apps for Education (GAFE) School and works in conjunction with CCBOE and Google to provide students with seamless cloud computing so that students can access their information anytime from anywhere as long as they are connected to the Internet.

The librarian serves as our school’s Google administrator working in conjunction with the districts’ technology integrator, and technology department, to provide students with this valuable service. Each student has his/her own Gmail account that provides access to Google Docs, Slides, Forms, Sheets, Calendar, and Contacts, via their Google Drive which is connected to the Cloud.

If a new student needs a Google school account he/she should contact the school librarian. A form is sent to the tech department and the new account is created,  or transferred (if transferring within the system) usuallly within a day or two the account will be ready to access. The format for usernames and passwords is located in the library and posted on the library website and wikisite.

Students are expected to know their personal password and keep it confidential. Passwords may be reset by English teachers, most Social Science teachers, and the librarian.

Printing

There is a fee for printing at 10 cents per page in black and white. No color printing is available.

Photocopying

There is a self-serve photocopier in the small hallway between libraries and the fee for copying is ten cents per page.

Charging Station

The library has a small phone/device charging area located at the circulation desk. Students must supply their own charger and be responsible for picking up their device before the bell rings.

The library/librarian is not responsbile for any devices that are charging in the library or left in the library. Do not leav your device unattended.

Computers and the Internet

Students should only use the computers when they have an academic need and they must abide by the Acceptable Use Policy

that the district enforces. Students who fail to comply may be suspended from computer use for a period of time as designated by the administration, school technology coordinator, or librarian.

Internet Safety

The library actively monitors student use of computers via a monitoring software program that allows the librarian to view the computer screen at any time. Students have been notified of the monitoring and

Library Orientation

The librarian holds a library orientation lesson for all grade levels at the onset of the school year. New students may schedule an orientation session 1:1 with a library worker, or may refer to the digital student handbook, or request an orientation pamphlet.

Student Staff Worker Expectations

If you are a student library staff worker and need to be excused to go to a teacher’s class during the period you work, you must have a pass from that teacher beforehand.

Library work comes before personal work.

Student staff workers main task is to manage the desk and incoming visitors and to be available to help and work with students or teachers who need assistance.

Do not allow non-staff workers to stay behind the desk, or spend your work-time visiting, or socializing. For course guidelines and additional policies and procedures for student staff refer to the student staff manual.
